The temperature in midtown Manhattan is expected to plunge to about 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 12 degrees Celsius) in the waning hours of 2017, with a “Real Feel” of 4F (minus 15C), according to AccuWeather.com.,If forecasts prove accurate, 2017 would match 1962 as the second-coldest New Year’s Eve on record. Top honours go to 1917, when the mercury in Times Square dropped to 1 F (-17C) and the wind chill came in at -18 F (-28C).

Madry Cox, 16, and his sister, Mattison, 19, travelled from Lubbock, Texas, to New York with their father for what he called a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to see the glittering spectacle that unfolds in Times Square every Dec. 31.,

“It’s worth bearing the cold to see the ball drop on New Year’s Eve,” he said. “It’ll be great.”,Hundreds of thousands of merrymakers are making the annual pilgrimage to New York’s Times Square on Sunday to witness the giant New Year’s Eve ball drop at midnight, undeterred by bitter cold and an unprecedented security operation., New Year’s Eve, Times Square Ball Drop, New York City

,Mattison Cox said she plans on wearing plenty of clothes, while still managing to look “a little bit cute,” and drinking coffee to stay warm.

“I’ve only seen it in the movies,” she said. “It’s nice to come witness in person.”

This year, police expect roughly 2 million people to crowd into the general vicinity of Times Square, the bow-tie-shaped plaza formed by the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in midtown Manhattan. That is roughly the same number as last year, when the temperature at midnight was a comfortable 44F (7C).

A limited number of people will have access to fenced-off viewing areas within the square, giving them an unobstructed view of the giant crystal ball mounted on a pole atop a building at the northern end of the square.

After hours of waiting, the throng will witness the ball’s one-minute descent ending at the stroke of midnight, when a barrage of fireworks and confetti will punctuate the moment.,“This event every year, New Year’s Eve, is one of the things that people all over the country, all over the world, most associate with New York City,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters last week. He said the annual rite of winter was a source of pride for the city and “a huge, joyous event.”

Revellers will count down the final hours of 2017 with a lineup of musical acts including Nick Jonas and Neil Diamond.

Mariah Carey is returning as well, no doubt hoping to make amends for last year’s highly criticized performance marred by technical difficulties. Andy Grammer will perform his hit song “Fresh Eyes” and John Lennon’s “Imagine” just before midnight.

Then comes the ball drop, a tradition that dates to 1907, three years after New Yorkers started gathering en masse in Times Square to usher in the new year.

The lighted ball, actually a geodesic sphere 12 feet (3.7 meters) in diameter and covered by illuminated crystals, will descend 70 feet (21 meters) in the final 60 seconds.

SHOW OF FORCE

Thousands of police will be on hand, some of them heavily armed, others undercover. The show of force is part of a beefed-up security plan that follows a spate of attacks in the city and around the world that authorities have labelled as terrorist.

The New York Police Department has provided officers with specialised training to stop any suicide bombers in response to an attempted bombing in a Times Square subway station walkway on Dec. 11.

Police will also deploy observation teams trained to spot snipers, increase the number of explosive-detecting dogs and position more officers throughout the area this year.

People who want to see the New Year’s Eve musical acts and other entertainment up close in Times Square will have to pass by dogs trained to detect explosives and heavily armed officers, go through a magnetometer to check for weapons, have their bags inspected, and then repeat all those steps a second time.

Police will again use dump trucks filled with sand, police cars and cement blocks to close streets starting at 11 a.m. (1600 GMT) on Sunday. About 125 parking garages in the area will be emptied of all cars and sealed.

PSG head coach Unai Emery said his team would be pushing for another victory.,”In the first game we managed an early goal, which meant Bayern had to put more pressure on us,” he said.

At 1.04pm, the Bureau said severe thunderstorms that are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were expected to affect people in the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane City, Moreton Bay and parts of Redland City and parts of Logan, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay council areas.,A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Southeast Coast and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.

Traffic remained slow on the Pacific Motorway between Yatala and Upper Mount Gravatt in both directions at 1pm, as well as on the Bruce Highway around Palmview.

Falls of 62mm west of Tewantin on the Sunshine Coast, 65mm at Mt Mee northwest of Brisbane and 60mm in western Brisbane have been recorded in just an hour.

Sippy Downs copped 93mm of rain from 9am to 12.30pm.

Since 9am today, about 67mm of rain has fallen in Inala on Brisbane’s southside, while Corinda has been affected by falls of 51mm.

This afternoon, Queensland Rail said some of their services could be affected by the severe weather and urged customers to check Translink’s website for updates.

“Services on the Caboolture line are experiencing delays and services on the Ipswich line are currently suspended through Wacol,” they said via Twitter.,

“Locations which may be affected include Beenleigh, Logan City, Cleveland, Redcliffe, Caloundra and waters off Caloundra,” the Bureau said.,Residents have been urged to take care as localised flooding increases and traffic builds in the state’s south., ‪‪Gold Coast‬, South East Queensland, Brisbane

,About 200mm has fallen in areas around Miva and Tiaro, north of Gympie, over the past few days.

Several roads remain closed around the state and authorities have warned of water over many others.

Local flooding has been reported in Bundaberg, Rockhampton and on the Sunshine Coast.

Seqwater this afternoon said outflows from Cedar Pocket Dam had increased due to continuing rain in the catchment area.

A more broad warning was earlier issued, saying damaging winds and hail were all possible along a stretch of coastline from the Sunshine Coast to the Whitsundays.

The latest update comes as southeast Queensland was warned to brace for a “peak” day of heavy rain, flash flooding and possible hail as a slow-moving weather system touches down.

Forecasters expected the deluge to begin early yesterday but the system hovered over central Queensland before finally arriving in the southeast late last night. In Rockhampton, heavy rain caused flash flooding, shutting off a number of streets.,In about an hour, 60.4mm fell in Yaamba northwest of Rockhampton.

Gympie was pelted with hail measuring more than 2cm and about 40mm of rain fell in the area between 3pm and 6pm. A total of 21 southeast Queensland beaches were also closed because of the weather threat.

A flood watch remains current, as the widespread rain is now expected to last until at least Wednesday.

Texting turned 25 on Sunday, ICYMI.

The first text message was sent on Dec. 3, 1992, by British engineer Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis, an executive at British telecom Vodafone, who was attending his company’s holiday party in Newbury, England.,Typed out on a PC, it was sent to Jarvis’s Orbitel 901, a mobile phone that would take up most of your laptop backpack, and read: Merry Christmas. But Jarvis didn’t send a reply because there was no way to send a text from a phone in those days.

Although Papworth is credited with sending the first text message, he’s not the so-called father of SMS. That honor (or blame) falls on Matti Makkonen, who initially suggested the idea back in 1984 at a telecommunications conference.

But texting didn’t take off over night. First it had to be incorporated into the then-budding GSM standard. Makkonen feels the technology actually was launched in 1994 when Nokia unveiled its 2010 mobile phone, the first device that let people easily write messages.,

,Today, about 97 percent of smartphone owners use text messaging, according to Pew Research, and along the way, a new set of sub-languages based on abbreviations and keyboard-based imagery has evolved. More than 561 billion text messages were sent worldwide in June 2014, about 18.7 billion texts sent every day, according researcher TextRequest.,Texting has become so popular that most Americans would rather type it than say it. US smartphone users are sending and receiving five times as many texts compared with the number of phone calls each day, according to the International Smartphone Mobility Report by mobile data tracking firm Infomate.

US quits UN global compact on migration, Migrant Crisis | USA - New YorkThe United States notified the United Nations that it will no longer take part in the global compact on migration, saying it undermines the nation’s sovereignty.

The US has been a part of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants since it was formed last year. The declaration aims to ensure the rights of migrants, help them resettle and provide them with access to education and jobs.

It calls for the negotiation of a global compact on migration, which is expected to be adopted next year.

In explaining its withdrawal Saturday, the US said the pact contains provisions that are inconsistent with the nation’s immigration policies.

While the US is proud of its leadership on migration and refugee issues, the global approach is not compatible with the nation’s sovereignty, according to Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN.

Haley said Trump made the decision, and emphasized that Americans should determine their own policies on immigration.

The $20 billion Barakah nuclear power plant is in Abu Dhabi’s far western desert. The first of its four reactors, being built in the UAE near its border with Saudi Arabia, is scheduled to come online in 2018.

The Yemeni rebels, known as Houthis, last month targeted the Saudi capital, Riyadh, with a ballistic missile that was intercepted by Saudi air defences. It was the deepest strike inside the kingdom since the war between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis and their allies began in March 2015.,Sunday’s claim comes amid heavy fighting in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, where the Houthis are facing off with fighters loyal to the country’s former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, in the fifth straight day of street fighting as the alliance between the two unravels.

The Houthis have accused Saleh of striking deals with the Saudi-led coalition, which has been waging an air campaign against the Houthi-Saleh alliance for nearly three years.

Since the recent clashes erupted, the Saudi coalition has been targeting the Houthis and backing Saleh’s camp to control Sanaa. The UAE is an active member of the coalition and its forces have mostly focused on securing the southern region of Yemen.,

Yemen’s Shia rebels on Sunday claimed they had launched a missile toward an under-construction nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates in the first such strike toward the country. Emirati officials had no immediate comment.,Houthis continue to fight with fighters loyal to country’s former president in Sanaa, Saudi Arabia‬, Yemen‬, ‪Houthis, ‪Iran

,At least 100 Emirati soldiers have been killed in the war, which was launched to dislodge the Houthis from Sanaa after they overran the capital and kicked out the internationally-backed Yemeni government from power.

Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of supplying Houthis with missiles, including the one used to target Riyadh on Nov. 4. Both the Houthis and Iran deny the claim.,Iran, meanwhile, has close trade ties with the UAE. In November, Iranian authorities ordered a two-day ban on a hard-line Iranian newspaper after it ran a headline saying the UAE’s tourism hub of Dubai was the “next target” for Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The UAE on Sunday was celebrating its 46th National Day with a four-day-long public sector holiday.

BBC BLACKOUT: THE STATS PROVE REAL CAN NO LONGER RELY ON BALE, BENZEMA & RONALDO, Sports | England – London, Zinedine Zidane

Written by:

Few can deny that Real Madrid are a better team when Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema are all fit and firing. Unfortunately for coach Zinedine Zidane, however, that seems to be something of a rare occurrence these days.,Bale returned from injury in some style on Tuesday night as he emerged from the bench to help Los Blancos to a 2-2 draw at home to Fuenlabrada, and with it, passage to the next round of the Copa del Rey.

But Bale will not be ready for the game against Athletic Club at San Mames on Saturday. No sooner had he come back, he was ruled out again, with Madrid claiming he will be rested in the Basque Country “as a precaution”. For what is usually a tough fixture, though, it would have been better had he been available.,

“I want to see Cristiano, Bale and Benzema playing together again,” Zidane had said in the press conference prior to the cup clash. Once again, however, he will have to wait.,The three forwards are yet to start a game all together for Los Blancos in the current campaign and the Welshman will be missing again on Saturday, Zinedine Zidane, Athletic Club‬, Gareth Bale

,Incredibly, the BBC trio have still not started a match for Madrid all together in 2017-18 and that is nothing new either. After starting 24 out of 60 games in 2013-14 and then 35 of a possible 59 the following season, the three forwards have featured from the outset just 34 times in two-and-a-half campaigns since.

Zidane said at his very first press conference that his plan as Real coach was to play with Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo in attack. “I won’t tell you the team I will pick,” he said. “But the three up front will play for sure.”
More often than not, though, that has been impossible and Zidane has, therefore, had to look at other options, with Isco included the most when Bale is out and Marco Asensio also used regularly in attack.

Despite only featuring 10 times for Madrid this season, Bale has more assists than any other player at the club in the current campaign (five), while he has also scored three goals.,Benzema, who missed a chunk of the season through injury as well, has struggled for goals. He now has five in his 15 appearances, but failed to net in La Liga until mid-October and opened his account in the Champions League earlier in November.

His first strike of the season had come in the Spanish Supercopa in August and it was in that series against Barcelona that Ronaldo was shown a red card and handed a subsequent five-match ban for pushing the referee.
The Portuguese also found life difficult upon his return and has only two goals to his name in La Liga, one a rebound after he saw a penalty saved at home to Malaga last weekend.

All three players have been booed at the Santiago Bernabeu this season and just when it appeared the trio were ready to get back into the groove together, Bale is missing again. That must be incredibly frustrating for Zidane and the French coach will hope he can finally field his favourite forwards together in a line-up soon.
